3 tips for dealing with tourist traffic in San Diego

Driving around San Diego can be frustrating any time of the year, but summers are often the worst. With tourists flowing through the streets, it can be difficult to get around. There is an increased likelihood of being in a wreck when there is more congestion.

Recent data shows that traffic deaths spike during the summer months. While drivers from out of town are enjoying the perfect weather you get to experience year-round, here are some strategies for staying safe.

1. Plan ahead

Take a look at the traffic conditions before you head out on the road. Your maps app on your smartphone should be able to give you a good indication of any traffic jams and provide you with alternate routes to use. You may be able to avoid all the annoying jams altogether.

2. Constantly scan your surroundings

One core aspect of defensive driving is to scan intersections, check your mirrors and monitor your blind spots. While you will not be able to see everything around you at all times, doing frequent scans will help you see any drivers who do not know what they are doing. When you are aware of your surroundings, you can reduce your chances of getting hit by a careless driver who is not paying attention to the road.

3. Keep calm

It is easy to get angry at motorists who are behaving aggressively or showing a lack of consideration. Take some things with you to help you cool off–literally and figuratively. It is always a good idea to take some cold water in your car in the hot weather. You may also want to turn on your favorite music or podcast so you can relax instead of letting the frustration build. Your demeanor can play a significant role in the quality of your driving.

Unfortunately, no one can completely avoid the dangers of bad drivers. Taking these steps may help you stay out of a crash.
